<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">After the
paint hardened the area to be masked was marked out using masking tape. I used
KiwiGrip non-skid (white). This non-skid was easy to apply and clean up (water

then rolled with a special textured roller. It’s the best non-skid I have used.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">The deck was made from laminated foam.
The top layer of glass was cut using a diamond blade in a circular saw. This
allows the foam to bend into a fair shape. Bog was applied in the cracks and
once sanded glass was laminated over the deck. The edges were rounded off and
taped to the side panel.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">There was a problem how to bolt the
beams to the floats and the easy way was by using inspection ports to allow
access to the bolts. Because there was a bulkhead under the beam it would have
required 2 ports for each beam. I didn’t want to have 4 ports on each float so
I decided to use the float as a plug and make a split mould of the floats. Instead
of the bulkhead there was two ring frames where the beams are attached.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">Probably not one of my smarter
decisions but it would allow me to build another boat with a lot less work. So,
I could justify my decision.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">The building frame longitudes and
bulkheads for the floats (MDF and plywood) was cut out and assembled. The frame
slots together and is self-aligning. The building frame bulkheads were rounded
on the bilge panel which is different to the original boat which has chines.
The side panel and the bottom panel were attached using gyprock screws.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">Then the bilge panel was strip planked
using laminated foam strips. Each was screwed to the building frame and glued
to the one below. Then glass was laminated over the bilge and bottom panel.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">The hull was taken off the building
frame and glass was applied over the strip plank area.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 107%;">The boat is built using foam sandwich using Gurit 10mm foam. We
have always used Klegecell in the past but this is what was available from our
supplier and it worked well.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 107%;">The panels are made by joining the foam sheets together the full
length of the boat and then covering with glass. Peel ply over the glass makes
a good surface to loft the panels.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>All the dimensions were supplied on the plans.
I used panel pins on the points between the stations and a thin piece of
plywood or a sail batten bent around the nails to draw the lines. All the hull
panels are the same as on the original Scarab except the bilge panels on the
main hull and floats, these panels were strip planked. </span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt;">The panels were all cut using a jig saw.</span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">This boat will be an off the beach
trimaran. The boat will be built using the plans for the Scarab 16 but with a
few alterations. There will be no cabin which will leave a large cockpit that
will allow up to three people to sail it in comfort. The floats are high volume
as are the original boat but the beams will be bolted to the deck of the floats
instead of being glued inside.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">The folding system will be similar to
the <a href="http://www.teamscarab.com.au/scarab18/design.html" target="_blank">Scarab 18</a>. The beams are mostly the same only smaller and the aluminium struts
are smaller. It will be easy to fold the boat in the water or on a trailer.
Once opened the beams will be anchored with a bolt through the aluminium strut.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">The boat will have a main sail and jib
with a prodder to use a schreecher.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">The original plan calls for chines on
the main hull and the floats. I will round off the bilge panel on both.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">Instead of having pivoting
centreboards in the floats as the original Scarab I will have a dagger board
set in the floor of the cockpit<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">The transom will be open to allow
water to drain quickly if some comes aboard.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">At the moment I don’t plan having an
outboard but there is space on the transom to mount a small one.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Before I was finished I had many comments on the look of the boat and thought this could be a popular small trimaran to teach kids how to sale. Originally it was built to use as a tender for my dream catamaran. There is a need for a small trimaran to sail in local clubs in this area (SE Queensland) to rival the beach cats. The water of the Great Sandy Traits is conducive to small boat racing and the competition is high. The clubs at Hervey Bay and Tin Can Bay could be great places to race small trimarans. It is not economically feastible to build these boats commerically as a one-off. Ray designed a new boat the same length but round bilge with a folding system similiar to the Scarab 16 <a href="http://www.teamscarab.com.au/scarab16/pictures.html">http://www.teamscarab.com.au/scarab16/pictures.html</a>. This boat will be built using moulds so we can speed production. The name of the new boat is uncertain;we will have to reach a compromise. The plugs which will be used to create the moulds are partially built.</div><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2MGwCaWA_nMDOQrmVsGDvWDqobunNH3WJbtpS76RQH_F9jPKKUeq2Ec8fSFQV-PMqAXTPap1A2r6X7btjQxKNxTx6WYPW1CEDtOBfdZUedryF8C0lDNUDRuX2JRmvFR9DbrEA8CvZ_0c/s1600-h/DSC01148.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 225px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401612366013444738" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2MGwCaWA_nMDOQrmVsGDvWDqobunNH3WJbtpS76RQH_F9jPKKUeq2Ec8fSFQV-PMqAXTPap1A2r6X7btjQxKNxTx6WYPW1CEDtOBfdZUedryF8C0lDNUDRuX2JRmvFR9DbrEA8CvZ_0c/s320/DSC01148.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbfS1DmCmS2Tfcau8At3lY3U6B6E3USKKdZZHWrDqEu-I4IB1YWN8d04zhBBgeZUZ2IM_5sq74-h3tTSWTaO2o6LDul5J-d55W7Ze7GifgXiKJx0PtjLA3cMikcZmlDH4tJ8s4-wqn0vA/s1600-h/DSC01135.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 225px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401612827367159842" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbfS1DmCmS2Tfcau8At3lY3U6B6E3USKKdZZHWrDqEu-I4IB1YWN8d04zhBBgeZUZ2IM_5sq74-h3tTSWTaO2o6LDul5J-d55W7Ze7GifgXiKJx0PtjLA3cMikcZmlDH4tJ8s4-wqn0vA/s320/DSC01135.jpg" /></a></div></div></div></div>Team Scarabhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02704646724922200148noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8139627212182974483.post-19168357266004814872009-11-03T17:40:00.000-08:002009-11-03T17:45:36.198-08:00Scarab 18<span style="font-family:Calibri;">I have been busy with many projects lately. There are as many different methods of paint preparation as there are builders. I will describe the method I use. <div><div>Because the boat is built with flat panels it is very easy to finish. I used peel ply when the panels were made so they are smooth and require little sanding. Filler is applied in a thin even coat (I use Q cells and polyester resin mixed to a peanut butter consistency). Polyester resin is painted over a small area and while still wet the bog is smoothed on with a metal drywall (gyrock) spreader. Metal is easy to clean and does not react with the resin and you can buy them wide enouth to cover the tape and panels in one go. I found that polyester does not like high humidity and will remain sticky for a long time if applied in the rain. This doesn't happen so much with epoxy. Why builders would use epoxy on a small foam boat at 3 times the cost and the related health hazards is beyond me?</div><div>If you are using plywood then the above method works well with epoxy resin. </div><div>I sand the panels with a 6" random orbital sander and 40 grit paper.</div><br /><br /><div></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNLHbGlA8CUB5uWXJjrSvJk1BITWpf4I42TKqxFrs0lIC4RGjr7qZWPeDIFnZwrVBCzucUeUCabl1dJ-K4gX6mqT_rBilLKmwyFAyMKAlnf2Ruc8Q7YBnBVag6awfaRdnFOCv09-57ABM/s1600-h/35.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324014240111601794" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 225px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNLHbGlA8CUB5uWXJjrSvJk1BITWpf4I42TKqxFrs0lIC4RGjr7qZWPeDIFnZwrVBCzucUeUCabl1dJ-K4gX6mqT_rBilLKmwyFAyMKAlnf2Ruc8Q7YBnBVag6awfaRdnFOCv09-57ABM/s320/35.jpg" border="0" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEithWwH5TkJk6z4UREQk0s6IBeWRDOvdv_mFjqYNzBqpW9gx4gwVmEoytqQqX8sTr4bSI_1Kjz6MSmt5urXPAKqzF95vFIQkzR6rzHFIqsUCiawykKK8ANobai9Vo-0ZHk7F0TB6CAKdjQ/s1600-h/DSC01096.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324014437630878354" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 225px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEithWwH5TkJk6z4UREQk0s6IBeWRDOvdv_mFjqYNzBqpW9gx4gwVmEoytqQqX8sTr4bSI_1Kjz6MSmt5urXPAKqzF95vFIQkzR6rzHFIqsUCiawykKK8ANobai9Vo-0ZHk7F0TB6CAKdjQ/s320/DSC01096.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div></div>Team Scarabhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02704646724922200148noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8139627212182974483.post-84469167625141324442009-04-11T21:57:00.000-07:002009-04-11T22:09:23.446-07:00Scarab 18 folding trimaran Part 13The edges of the transom were taped. The object is to have as many jobs going at the same time to avoid wasting time. The main reason for this blog is to show how easy the construction is and how many hours it takes for one person to build this boat.<br />To see a more organised layout see <a href="http://www.teamscarab.com.au/S18designnotes.html">www.teamscarab.com.au/S18designnotes.html</a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjPmfYY5vvXfn5WMMX35AhjgaK336PfJ7rMzTEIChiZeJwuOfHuAWbMHnIaI7p0IebYll7VL6PvI009Z4doftUR6gFlh1ckp9BATyqh74CXZYPxR20vTqHEoOhky_Bl6zyjSg4k4DkRr8/s1600-h/28.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299920316584028082" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 225px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjPmfYY5vvXfn5WMMX35AhjgaK336PfJ7rMzTEIChiZeJwuOfHuAWbMHnIaI7p0IebYll7VL6PvI009Z4doftUR6gFlh1ckp9BATyqh74CXZYPxR20vTqHEoOhky_Bl6zyjSg4k4DkRr8/s320/28.jpg" border="0" /></a>Instead of precovering the panels for the float deck they are covered in place. The laminate is too stiff to bend in the required curve. Scraps of foam are screwed to the side of the float and the foam bent over and attached through the scrap piece.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVPZBCNatU66rpdsnfchyphenhyphen9Dsw9pgZDRi7q3mbH0UJcBmY2sa-ztBkUDUGJIb7bAREoo759SlQts-SONAJI4cTsdGVTU80lpdr0LxON-5vHSlu1ECrCrdOsXQgV8D7-8xEKzoTZw5ZUnVw/s1600-h/29.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299920618809650802" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 225px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVPZBCNatU66rpdsnfchyphenhyphen9Dsw9pgZDRi7q3mbH0UJcBmY2sa-ztBkUDUGJIb7bAREoo759SlQts-SONAJI4cTsdGVTU80lpdr0LxON-5vHSlu1ECrCrdOsXQgV8D7-8xEKzoTZw5ZUnVw/s320/29.jpg" border="0" /></a> The deck is laminated with glass cloth and resin. I’ve been asked to provide more information and more pictures, so here we go.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzF2fgII_HY0zqFfe4Z4BikVjlP9NdgqvKr8_5G1foS82fArsZzPrMIV_IGLXfq5mO2Hl5hmmTRG6YXRyAeFW9FaYc7G18cssHuFEty5fii4DQfyY7PDEvq5tnEPEsuYhFhYn4VWhJoLY/s1600-h/DSC00999.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5279745208917686338" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 225px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzF2fgII_HY0zqFfe4Z4BikVjlP9NdgqvKr8_5G1foS82fArsZzPrMIV_IGLXfq5mO2Hl5hmmTRG6YXRyAeFW9FaYc7G18cssHuFEty5fii4DQfyY7PDEvq5tnEPEsuYhFhYn4VWhJoLY/s320/DSC00999.jpg" border="0" /></a>The mould was built using form ply. It is readily available here, is relatively inexpensive and has a smooth surface so the glass doesn’t stick (but plywood will work as well). Pilot holes were drilled as markers for the pins that hold the folding system. The mould was waxed and polished a couple of times. Then mould release was wiped on with a cloth. The pilot holes were blocked with a small bit of filler (resin and Q cells works well).<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p></p><br /><br /><p></p><br /><br /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5279746882256482098" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 225px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjj2MWIL_wkst99nWofoWSHVE2EAmBfjLHEBjbkYOBl_BQ60N4waySIj_3nKihIdNONbiXreQ96O1UdUGaYd3KKmUmS9JhKQKrPeJ2hTLi_d336u_FcQAw4OU9GP3YxywTsPMBARIT7oU/s320/DSC01005.jpg" border="0" />The glass was cut out using a battery powered cutter.
